Indians adopting alternate homes

I was reading a blog posted by one of my Friends, where he seemed disappointed by the fact that Indians are migrating to western countries for the following reasons
Traffic obedience, serene/clean environment, respect for others, hardly-seen beggars, Social security...which he says are not justified reasons for migration.
I started commenting on his blog but it turned out to be lengthy and hence this blog!
With due respect to his patriotism, I would like to pen down my experiences and thoughts around the reasons.
The traffic discipline in India is appalling to say the least.
I was shocked at the callous attitude of the traffic there…may b my stay at the US highlighted this fact. People in India(particularly Blore) acted as if they were colorblind, no matter what color the traffic light showed the action was always “GO”
People with 2 wheelers were driving on the footpath!!! And by two wheelers I don’t mean just bicycle.I was party to this sight…A traffic policeman was screaming his lungs out to control the traffic as they were not obeying his hand signals… and then he helplessly let them go 'as they pleased' because his voice instructions also fell to deaf ears. Such disregard for rules!!!!It was a pitiable site.A few of my frnds who have returned to India from the US say that they have stopped driving their two wheelers and travel only by cars because they are petrified by the traffic.
I think Discipline in the citizens is the key to making a country progress.
Making India clean and green is also a part of discipline too.
People in India throw garbage on the roads ,while in US the same people of india pick/gather all the garbage and throw it in the trash.
The reason is the roads are so clean in the US that no one wants to carry the guilt of initiating throwing garbage around. Another important reason being that in the western countries you would find a trash bin within the range of your sight no matter where you are standing. In India you will not find any for miles, hence the roads are always unclean.
While visiting restaurants/malls/stores in the US , People stood, opened the door and allowed me to pass by before they passed because I had a kid in my arms.
When I went to India for a vacation I was reaching my 3 AC coach through a 2AC coach and it took a few moments extra for me to close the door as I had a kid with me. I was rebuked for wanting to stay longer in a 2AC at the cost of 3AC ticket.
I was really disappointed. teh reason being after getting such courteous treatment from foreigners how could I deserve a treatment like this from people at home??
Social security and lack of beggars are interlinked. While I do not understand how the Govt manages the Social Security I am sure it has something to do with people paying their taxes honestly.
So I guess these are the reasons that people living in the Western countries don’t want to get back to India.
Ofcourse there are 100s of reasons why people do want to go back home from the west…which may be I will write about some other time.

Good one. Well written.

I am not against migration. I strongly believe that everyone has the right to live anywhere on earth, if not on mars at least now.

Yet, I do not encourage people migrating to the developed countries for not-so-justifiable reasons such as those you pointed-out from my blog. Migrations based on these reasons show only their irresponsibility, in my opinion.

We do not have to be patriotic. We are required to realize that whenever we are given a place, we must leave it more beautiful than what we had inherited.

Running away from problems seldom solves one.

DUST BINS-India is a developing country...n we cannot afford the luxury of having bins at every foot step....'for miles' is an exaggeration....I THINK GANDHIRI IS THE SOLUTION TO UR PROBLEM.JAI HIND.

Hey Sapna;

Good to see you on the blogger world! Welcome...

I fundamentally disagree with the idea of migration for reasons what you have mentioned in there.

End of the day, I believe things like cleanliness, courtesy and security is everybody's business. You are the change what you want to see!!! So, it is sometimes worthwhile to think what we have done to get things straight instead of running away.

And comparing the US & the India on the same terms is comparing apples and oranges.(I hope I dont have to expand there...) And there is no doubt that India can be much more better even with the current resources & contraints - but running away - is not a solution.

For all you know people like you & me who had an opportunity to see the wealth on this side of the world have a scale to measure on - think about the vast majority who does not even know numbers on the scale - where they (are made to) believe that 12 hours of uninterrupted power supply is a luxury, having 3 times a meal is a luxury.. to name a few... (I am not talking about upper or the upper middle class, but the middle class & below who is a real majority in numbers & does not have access to most of the so called developments...)

I think people have the right to choose where they want to live. They do so for various reasons and they are justified in doing so. I believe it can be as personal as the food you eat.
I would love to follow rules and try to play my part in the larger scheme of things, but it doesnt end there...I strongly believe that having good governance plays a big role in getting where some of the other countries have gone. And so, I d blame the government more than the people..not to say that we, the people are not at fault. People should elect a good government and government should take care of their business which is to ensure people enjoy all their rights. But think about this, we are talking about a nation where some politicians conspire that people even do not get the right information to make the right choice...to the extent they dont want people to even come out of their poverty! what can you do about it?
My solution, get a dictator to clean up the mess and then get back to democracy where we have more statesmen than politicians.
I may have deviated from the core topic itself, but when you ask a few why's, thats where i was drawn.

Hi Vishal:

How many dictators do you get to clean-up? I am sure, one is not enough. Do you think dictators would really pave way for democracy later? You are too idealistic :)

I have been part of many such discussions. They are endless. I have seen both parts of the world.

What I have realized is wherever I am I should appreciate that place and people and try my best to carry home soem of the best points I see and try and see if I can implement back home.

I guess so far I have been able to do so.

Thanks for this thought provoking blog Sapna!
